Last Saturday my husband and I volunteered at the annual MDA Freedom Ride in southern Wisconsin. All benefits from this 80+mile motorcycle ride go to support children with muscular dystrophy. We were riding for Jerry’s Kids. Here is just a section of the setup before we got started.
We were two of 100 road guards placed strategically along the route to stop traffic and allow the 1400 riders to progress smoothly and safely through intersections. The ride was beautiful. Rolling hills. Stunning farmland. Dips and curves and some of the nicest people along the way.
I was amazed at the number of people, families mostly, who set up tents, folding chairs and blankets and made it an event just to sit back and watch the bikes go by for half an hour or so.
But it was hot. Really hot. And I mean beastly hot. And humid. Here was our first corner. That is my better half, fending off the heavy traffic (heh heh). We had a lot of water on the bike, hats and good humor. But it was still reeeeeaaally hot. No shade and nothin’ but blazing sun.
These guys were incredibly popular. I don’t know who they were, but they were set up on a corner on the second half of the ride. And they had ice-cold bottled water for each and every road guard. Whoever you are, thank you!
Because we were road guards, we got to see all of the riders go by — twice. Here are some of my happy favorites.
