It’s always fun when people ask me where I take the athletes to have those “gritty” sports photographs taken. (An old building? A field? The Parthenon?)
Actually, we don’t have to go very far.
We start out in my camera room, right here in Baraboo.
In reality, the process starts earlier than that. It’s up to the athletes on the team to brainstorm and come to a consensus on the theme of the poster. Once that is done, someone, usually a parent, schedules the shoot, and off we go!
I have to say, I LOVE shooting the senior athletes. They’ve worked hard, usually for four years, and it’s their time to shine. They know each other well, some having played in the sport for 10+ years together. They’ve got lots of talent and energy…
The kids who know me usually volunteer to “go first,” and they can really strut their stuff. (Um, have they done this type of thing before??) Sometimes I shoot them individually, sometimes in groups. I nearly always mix them up when putting the layout together.
It’s always a work in progress. I come up with ideas, they come up with ideas, and sometimes things fall into place on their own.
It’s their senior year!! They’re on top of the world!
